Updates lists

Jump down the page to the following updates lists, and use the Update Lists button at the bottom of the screen to return here:

The updates here are sorted into lists by component. The lists are designed for use with HFSLIP (Wikipedia article). As a result, they may omit certain updates (in contrast to other similar lists). For help with HFSLIP, post your query in the HFSLIP Forum at MSFN. Likewise, please post there any corrections you think necessary for the lists. Updates here are multilanguage, unless otherwise stated.

Update Types

As well as the latest official updates for Windows 2000 on general release from Microsoft, the following types of update are also listed here.

Hotfixes available by request (HBRs) were produced by Microsoft to fix specific problems, and are issued on a per-request, optional basis via email (they are not generally available like other updates). Unlike updates on general release, they were not tested extensively. For example, they did not undergo regression testing. As such, some of these hotfixes may cause unforeseen problems for some users. HBRs have a yellow background and a mail icon for their links (as shown in the key), unless they are superseded, in which case their background is grey.

Unofficial updates, generally, are produced after studying fixes that Microsoft provides for other supported operating systems. Since Microsoft ended support for Windows 2000, a few determined and generous folks have worked independently to produce and release unofficial updates (in particular MSFN members WildBill, blackwingcat, tomasz86, MDGx and acus). Unofficial updates have a violet background and a wand icon for their links (as shown in the key).

Superseded updates are those replaced by either newer unofficial updates or newer hotfixes available by request from Microsoft. The description for each superseded update has a link to the newer update that supersedes it. Superseded updates are listed here for those who prefer not to use unofficial updates or hotfixes. They are distinguished here from other updates by a grey background and grey text (as shown in the key).

Experimental and problematic updates are either those unofficial updates which have not been thoroughly tested yet or official updates and hotfixes available by request which are proven to cause issues after installation. It is generally recommended to be careful when using them. Experimental and problematic updates have a red background and an exclamation mark icon for their links (as shown in the key).

Example Update Scenarios (disclaimer)

For the latest updates (of all types):
Disregard the grey-background superseded updates.
Use the others.
For the latest official updates only (including hotfixes):
Disregard the unofficial updates.
Use superseded updates (except those replaced by hotfixes - in these cases, use the newer hotfixes).
Use the others.
For the latest official updates only (excluding hotfixes):
Disregard the unofficial updates.
Disregard the hotfixes (available by request).
Use superseded updates (except when a superseded update itself is unofficial or a hotfix).
Use the others.

N.B. you can disregard or hide updates listed here via the toggle buttons at the bottom of the screen (requires javascript and a browser newer than Internet Explorer 5x).

Select the correct version for what you are slipstreaming! Don't mix and match versions!

Internet Explorer (IE) and Outlook Express (OE)
Windows 2000 comes with IE5 (and OE5). If slipstreaming IE6, use the IE6 (and OE6) updates listed, not the IE5 (and OE5) updates. Likewise if slipstreaming IE5, use the IE5 (and OE5) updates listed, not those IE6 (and OE6) updates. Don't use both IE5 and IE6 updates together! An advantage to slipstreaming IE6 is that newer unofficial IE6 updates have been produced after Microsoft ended support for Windows 2000, based on official updates for IE6 Windows XP. If using FDV's fileset, he recommends using IE5 (and OE5) updates, but you may try instead to slipstream IE6, if you wish.
DirectX (DX)
Windows 2000 comes with DX7. To keep DX7 (and not upgrade to DX9), use DX7 updates. If slipstreaming DX9, choose between DX 9.0C Standard or DX 9.0C Gaming, and use the DX9 updates. Your choice between Standard or Gaming should depend upon your requirements and circumstances (for example, hardware constraints could make it less desireable to use DX 9.0C Gaming).
MDAC
Windows 2000 comes with MDAC 2.53. MDAC updates are not entirely cumulative. So, to get the latest available MDAC files, you should not omit version 2.53 updates. However: although for an up-to-date system you would also require MDAC 2.81, slipstreaming both MDAC 2.53 and 2.81 together will not leave you with the latest MDAC files (because unfortunately HFSLIP copies older 2.53 files over newer 2.81 files - thanks tomasz86). Here are two ways around this:
  1. slipstream MDAC 2.53 only, and then install MDAC 2.81 manually, once you have installed Windows; or
  2. use the unofficial 927779 v2 (instead of the official 927779), which doesn't suffer from the problem of older files overwriting newer.
Windows Media Player (WMP)
Windows 2000 comes with WMP7 (and also WMP 6.4, named mplayer2.exe). If not slipstreaming WMP9, use WMP7 updates. If slipstreaming WMP9, use the WMP9 installer (for your language) and WMP9 updates instead. WMP6 updates are required, whether slipstreaming WMP7 or WMP9. Most of the WM codecs/updates can be used regardless of WMP version.
Script updates
Windows 2000 comes with Windows Script 5.1 (JScript, VBScript, etc). Installing IE6 will update Script to version 5.6. The last official Script version for Windows 2000 is Script 5.7 (but an unofficial Script 5.8 update was released since). The last official Script 5.6 and 5.7 updates both address the same security issues. Choose between slipstreaming Script update versions 5.1, 5.6, 5.7 or the unofficial 5.8.

This update is problematic. Slipstreaming it causes Error 87 with SclgNtfy (Secondary Logon Service Notification), but installing it manually doesn't. However, installing manually will overwrite some newer files, because they share the same build number (thanks tomasz86). Workaround: install this update manually, thus: extract 884872 to its own folder (from a command prompt, using the -x switch). Then extract Crypt32.dll and Cryptnet.dll from 955417, and Browser.dll from 891861 (Update Rollup 1). Replace the corresponding files from 884872's folder with these latter (newer) files. Finally, install 884872 manually by clicking update.exe in 884872's "update" subfolder HF Windows2000-KB884872-x86-XXX.exe Sep 2004 HBR 884872 Dssbase.dll, Dssenh.dll, Rsabase.dll, Rsaenh.dll 5.0.2195.6972, Ksecdd.sys 5.0.2195.6824. Also includes Browser.dll 5.0.2195.6866, crypt32.dll and cryptnet.dll 5.131.2195.6926, which are older by date than those found in other updates. Please read the notes. SP5

If installing 894190 manually, it will overwrite a newer Browser.dll from 891861 (Update Rollup 1), because it shares the same build number (even though it is older, differing in size and date). Workaround if installing manually:: extract 894190 to its own folder (from a command prompt, using the -x switch). Then extract Browser.dll from 891861 (Update Rollup 1). Replace the corresponding file from 894190's folder with this latter (newer) file. Finally, install 894190 manually by clicking update.exe in 894190's "update" subfolder HF Windows2000-KB894190-x86-XXX.exe Feb 2005 HBR 894190 Memory leak when the "Security policy processing" policy is enabled and the "Process even if the Group Policy objects have not changed" option is selected - Scecli.dll 5.0.2195.7029.
